Stansted sits just off the M11, 40 miles from central London, and every flight uses its one terminal building. GM Rides runs transfers between Stansted and London around the clock, with a fixed price quoted before you book.
All flights use the same terminal, opened in 1991, with an arrivals extension added in 2008. The airport is open 24/7, but the terminal building itself closes between midnight and 02:00. A £1.1bn development will extend it and add a new check-in hall.
Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2.com, TUI, British Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet, SunExpress, Corendon, Transavia, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and Air Algérie all fly from Stansted.
After baggage reclaim you go through customs and out into the arrivals hall. Your driver is waiting there with a name board, and you will have their name, photo, phone number and car details 30 minutes before pick-up.
Stansted charges for its drop-off area outside the terminal and sends pick-ups to its car parks.
The drop-off area costs £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 over 15 minutes, with a 30-minute maximum; coming back in within 30 minutes costs £28 again. There are no barriers: cameras log the car, and the charge is paid online or by phone by midnight the day after. Missing the deadline brings a £100 Parking Charge Notice, cut to £60 if paid within 14 days. Every vehicle pays, electric cars and Blue Badge holders included.
Express Set Down is for drop-offs only. Cars collecting passengers use the Short Stay car parks, at £13 for up to 30 minutes and £21 for up to an hour. The Mid Stay car park allows up to 60 minutes free and is a seven-minute ride from the terminal on a free 24/7 shuttle bus.

From London, take the M11 north to junction 8a and follow the airport signs (junction 8 if you are coming from the Cambridge side). The M11 begins in north-east London, where it meets the A406 North Circular and the A12, so the City and east London have the shortest run.
Outside the rush hours, allow 60 to 90 minutes between Stansted and central London: less from the City and Docklands, more from the West End. Weekday peaks on the North Circular and the approach to the M11 can add a lot more.
Luton is about 43 miles to the west. Heathrow is 60 to 70 miles away depending on the route, via the M11 and M25 or across north London, usually 1½ hours or more.
