Is Heathrow Airport Open 24 Hours?
Planning Your Journey Through Heathrow
Quick answer
- Yes. The Government imposes no closure period at Heathrow. The Department for Transport (DfT) calls it a "24 hour airport".
- Night flights are capped at 5,800 a year between 23:30 and 06:00.
- No departures are scheduled between 22:40 and 06:00, and no arrivals between 22:55 and 05:05, Heathrow says.
- Landings start around 04:30, but the first Heathrow Express only reaches Terminals 2 and 3 at 04:53.
- For very early or late journeys, a pre-booked transfer covers the gap in public transport.
Heathrow's night flight rules
Heathrow says "there is no formal ban on night flights", but night operations "are heavily restricted by the Government". The current rules, confirmed by the DfT in December 2024, run from October 2025 to October 2028.
| Season | Night flights allowed (23:30 to 06:00) |
|---|---|
| Summer | 3,250 |
| Winter | 2,550 |
| Full year | 5,800 |
That is roughly 16 flights a night, according to the DfT. A voluntary ban also stops flights scheduled between 04:30 and 06:00 from landing before 04:30.
What is open at Heathrow overnight?
More than 80,000 people work at Heathrow, and 26% of staff arrived before 06:00 in 2024, its Travel Report says. Free trains link the terminals every day.
That does not mean every shop, check-in desk or security lane is open all night. Heathrow does not publish terminal-by-terminal overnight hours in its reports, so check Heathrow's official website or your airline.
Can you sleep at Heathrow?
Heathrow has no sleeping pods, and its byelaws allow staff to move on anyone without reasonable cause to be there. For an overnight wait, Heathrow lists hotels in or linked to terminals: Aerotel (Terminal 3 arrivals), Hilton (Terminal 4) and Sofitel (Terminal 5).
First and last flights
Early arrivals
In 2024, 5,351 flights landed between 23:30 and 06:00. Of these, 93.6% landed between 04:30 and 06:00, and the busiest half hour was 05:00 to 05:30, according to Heathrow's Night Flights Report.
Late departures
Delayed flights can leave after 23:30: 464 did in 2024, 69% of them before midnight. None left between 02:00 and 06:00.
Getting to and from Heathrow at night
| Service | First train into Heathrow (weekdays) | Last train out of Heathrow |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Express | 04:53 at Terminals 2 and 3 | 00:03 from Terminals 2 and 3 |
| Elizabeth line | 05:00 at Terminals 2 and 3 | 00:12 from Terminals 2 and 3 |
The Piccadilly line runs all night only on Friday and Saturday nights, and the Night Tube does not serve Terminal 4. Timetables change each May and December, so check before you travel.
On other nights there are no trains between about 00:15 and 04:50, just as the dawn arrivals begin.
When a pre-booked transfer is the easiest option
Taxi and private hire is already the most popular way to and from Heathrow: 28.37% of passengers in 2024, ahead of private car (23.45%), Heathrow's figures show. Industry evidence cited by the DfT says 06:00 to 06:59 is Heathrow's busiest hour for arriving passengers.
A transfer makes most sense when:
- you land between 04:30 and 06:00, before trains are running
- you need to reach the airport before the first train
- you travel on a Sunday to Thursday night, when no Tube runs all night
- your flight is delayed and could land after midnight
